The Constant Outsider

Memoirs of a South Boston Mechanic

By: Thomas M. Cirignano

A true and engaging account of a struggle for acceptance, in the harsh environments of South Boston, Dorchester, and beyond.

The Constant Outsider is a lively flashback to an era in Boston's history which was heavily influenced by organized crime, courtesy of unscrupulous Mobster Whitey Bulger. Throw into the mix, court ordered desegregation of the Boston schools via "Forced Busing," along with the violence caused by the gasoline shortages of the 1970's and it was a very exciting time to own a filling station and repair shop in "Southie," as the author did until 1987.

Author and survivor Thomas M. Cirignano has seen it all…rackets, discrimination, the plight of many victims and more. He witnessed firsthand the hostility of the inner-city neighborhoods of Boston and got himself into dangerous, and often near fatal situations, far too often. This is an engaging look at the author’s amazing experiences, and you are invited along for the wild ride, in

The Constant Outsider: Memoirs of a South Boston Mechanic .

Readers will relive many unbelievable moments as experienced by the author, such as riots, gang wars, physical beatings by thugs and a community being overtaken by murder and drugs. You will get an inside look at what it was like to live and work in “Southie” during the heyday of Whitey Bulger's gang and the resulting unbridled illegal activities that struck the predominantly Irish neighborhood of South Boston. The author himself had a dangerous encounter with Whitey, and lived to tell about it. How did the author survive and what did he learn from his experiences? Read Tom's vivid memoir and find out. You won't be disappointed!

*Note: While the accounts are true, names that first appear in quotation marks are not the actual names of the people discussed. The names were changed to protect both the innocent and the guilty.

"My book provides you with the

opportunity to look deeply inside yourself. You will be encouraged to utilize the “Reader’s Notes” pages within the book, to explore and document the significant people, critical choices, and life changing events of your own past. These pages, if utilized as I intended, will provide you with valuable insite into how and why you became the person you are today." Tom

Over time, within the area of view from the office door shown above,

A man was shot several times while at the pumps.

A boy was beaten unconscious, and then kicked full-force in the face.

A black man was brutally attacked by a gang of youths wielding hockey sticks.

Whitey Bulger threatened me with a gun during the gas shortage.

Farther down E. Third Street, Whitey was killing people,

and burying them in the cellar of a house.

I confronted another would-be killer who parked at my pumps.

He later returned and shot my friend eleven times.

A drug dealer often tossed joints from his car while driving by,

as a gesture of good-will.

There was never a dull moment in "Southie" during the 1970s and 1980s.

Read all about these incidents, and much more.
